CAM Not So Alternative Anymore: Holistic Healing Research Supports Efficacy in OT Practice
Here is an article I co-wrote with Holistic OT, Mandy Lubas. It was published in ADVANCE Magazine for Occupational Therapy Practitioners on June 10, 2013. While this is geared toward Occupational Therapy Practitioners, it is applicable to us all – whether you are a practitioner of health care or one who uses holistic care. Complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) is, by definition, healthcare that falls outside of researched and “proven” methods of mainstream healthcare. This has been determined by our modern-day, mainstream medical system. We are seeing a trend of increased research for what has been considered alternative demonstrate efficacy and are seeing increased use of these approaches. Much of what has…

Expanding Holistic Care in to Mainstream Health Care
I am grateful to be able to share a Holistic OT column with Mandy Lubas, OTR/L in ADVANCE Magazine for Occupational Therapy Practitioners. We wrote this article, “Complementary and Alternative Medicine is an Emerging Specialty Practice Area in the Profession” in the Fall of 2012. We received such great reviews and responses that we now have a whole column dedicated to bringing Holistic – Mind, Body, Spirit Medicine in to health care through Occupational Therapy practice. This is the first article for our new column, “Light on Holistic OT.” Enjoy and thank you for all of the great support!

Autumn to Winter – The Seasons and Your Health
We are transitioning from Autumn, the harvesting time of year, to Winter, a time to stay warm and conserve one’s energy until Springtime. Autumn is a time to celebrate and enjoy the abundance from the growth of Spring and Summer and to prepare for Winter. In the tradition of Traditional Chinese Medicine Autumn is governed by the Metal Element. The Metal Element represents the minerals of earth such as salt, ores, or jewels. Metal can assist with our structures, strength, and substance. It also conducts electricity which can assist with communication, building networks, and holding things together. How are you communicating with others? How are you communicating with yourself? What…

Symbolic Cards – Intuition and Healing with Art Therapy
As part of my training and development of my Intuition, my teacher taught me how to make my own personal ‘Symbolic Cards’ or ‘Innie Cards.’ They continue to help me to this day and I share with students how to make their own deck as part of the Intuitive Development Course. These cards combine Intuition and Art Therapy with Healing and Soul Development. They become a representation of what it is you may need to know about yourself or a situation in your life to help you heal. They speak directly to those places in you that need the balm of Spirit to lovingly guide you forward. Here is an…

Staying Healthy with the Seasons – Late Summer
Late Summer is the time of transition between Summer and Autumn. It has its own season in Chinese 5 Element Theory and it relates to the energy of the Earth. All other Elements come from and can be felt in the Earth Element. So, it is very important to be aware of how your Earth Element is functioning for you. Home, Center, and The Body are aspects governed by the Earth Element. If you do not feel at home with yourself, at ease, centered, grounded, or have difficulty taking in nourishment from food and drink, or from life itself you may want to consider looking at ways to balance your…

Summer – Staying Healthy with the Seasons
“Summer Time and the living is easy!” This is the time of year to soak up the sun, enjoy the flowers, green, growth, and nature in all its glory! According to the rhythms of nature and within the context of the Chinese 5 Element theory, Summer is governed by the Fire Element. This can be seen and felt by the stronger Sun and expansive energy of longer days and shorter nights. The Heat of Summer and the strong Yang energy are reflected internally. The meridians, or energy pathways, associated with this element are the Heart, Small Intestine, Pericardium, and Triple Warmer. The pathways can be assessed to determine the energetic…
