Emmy’s Musings and Spring Update 2017
It’s been a little while since my last blog post. It has been a full beginning to the new year in 2017! I am fortunate to have been asked to create an online course for the American Occupational Therapy Association on “Occupational Therapy with Complementary Health Approaches and Integrative Health.” This came about after petitioning them with the Holistic OT Community requesting that they offer more continuing education courses on these topics. I spent most of the end of December and all of January, in between client sessions, creating this course. Integrative Medicine is being utilized by more people in recent years. For example, there are twice as many people in…

Are We in the Midst of a Revolution?
There has been a lot going on in my world as a holistic health care practitioner who also holds a conventional mainstream health care license – combined together; a Holistic OT. I am finally convinced that holistic/integrative medicine is here to stay and will only continue to grow – to the point that it will completely infiltrate all of health care and truly transform it. One may consider it as a revolution that is happening. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a revolution is defined as: revolution noun rev·o·lu·tion \ˌre-və-ˈlü-shən\ Simple Definition of revolution : the usually violent attempt by many people to end the rule of one government and start a…

Prevention & Wellness
I have heard a lot about Prevention in the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. I wanted to find out just what was covered, and I have always felt that our health care system, including occupational therapists, could do a better job of helping people not become sick in the first place. In fact, prevention is what led me on the holistic journey in the first place. Here is an article I recently wrote for ADVANCE Magazine for Occupational Therapy Practitioners. It was originally published on June 16, 2015. It discusses how OTs can be leaders in prevention and wellness, and it also highlights how our health care system…

I Blogged All Month in April for OT Month!
Throughout the entire month of April I intended to blog every day for OT Month. I did this for two reasons. I wanted to continue to raise awareness about the wonderful world of Holistic OT, and to challenge myself to share interesting, relevant, and valuable information with OTs and those seeking Holistic OT services. All of the blog posts are on the HolisticOT.org website. You can read my summary of “What I Learned Blogging in April for OT Month.” Each piece was written for health care professionals and OTs to strengthen their understanding of Holistic Health Care, and for anyone looking for tips and suggestions on how to stay well or…

Holistic OT is Going Strong!
It has been 4 years since I first wrote about what I believe Holistic OT is and can be. Since then, I have had the good fortune of meeting and connecting with many OTs around the world who are embracing Mind-Body-Spirit Medicine, Prevention and Wellness in OT practice. When I wrote that first post I had no idea how quickly this would all get embraced. I now fully believe that holistic and integrative health care is here to stay. Dedicated professionals who know there are more and sometimes better ways to help their clients are the one of the reasons that holistic care will continue to grow and expand. There are…
